A Typical Day at Wooddale Community Nursery School

FREE PLAY
The school day begins with an hour of free play time when children will benefit from playing with the entire group of children, all ages together. At this time, they will have opportunities for:
  • Large motor activities (such as climbing, sliding, riding trikes and turtle racers).
  • Quieter activities (such as puzzles, looking at books, building with blocks and Legos, playing with Playmobil).
  • Dramatic play where children can play dress-up or play house with a play kitchen and housekeeping area.
  • Art activity during this free time. The art activity allows the children time to be creative but also requires them to learn to follow the teacherís directions.
  • At the end of free play, children work together with the teachers to clean up the play area and put away toys.

MUSIC
During this time the children will sing songs, listen to stories, act out stories and songs, move to a variety of music, participate in rhythm band activities, and learn to follow directions in a group. Music can last from 15 to 25 minutes, depending on the childrenís interests and needs.

SNACK & SMALL GROUP TIME
Each teacher has a class of up to nine children and the classes are organized by age. During the small group time the children have a snack and opportunities to listen to a story, play a group game and participate in age appropriate activities.

Our curriculum

Each week of school has a theme (i.e. seasons, children's authors, etc.). Art and music activities take place every day and are planned to coordinate with the weekly theme.

Click here for detailed information on weekly themes.

Special events

Occasional field trips are planned including activities such as visiting a pumpkin patch, attending a children's play, etc. In addition, we invite special guests that complement our weekly theme.

Communicating with families

Because of our small, intimate atmosphere, teachers have the opportunity to share information informally with parents or caregivers every day.
We also have:
  • Formal conferences in the fall and spring
  • Monthly newsletter
  • Opportunities for parental involvement
